Frequently asked questions

Here you’ll find answers to frequently asked questions about applying for financial support from FVO, your application and what happens after you’ve submitted it.

Applying for financial support

Who can apply for financial support?

To apply, you need to meet some basic requirements:

  • You have applied for and received a decision on all benefits you may be entitled to, such as housing allowance, housing supplement and maintenance support.
  • You have a permanent place to live.
  • You are considered to be in financial need under the Swedish Tax Agency’s rules.

For 2025, the income limit is SEK 235,200 per year for a person living alone. For each additional person in the household, whether an adult or a child, SEK 58,800 is added to this limit.

Exemples:

  • One person living alone: maximum SEK 235,200
  • One adult with one child: maximum SEK 294,000
  • Two adults: maximum SEK 294,000
  • Two adults with two children: maximum SEK 411,600

Even if your income is above the limit, you may still be able to receive support. In this case, we’ll look at your finances and personal situation individually. For example, an unexpected period of sick leave may have affected your finances. We consider the entire household and everyone living there.
Meeting the basic requirements does not guarantee that you’ll receive financial support. We assess each application individually, and FVO has limited funds available.

How much financial support can I receive?

The amount you may receive depends on what you need support for, your circumstances and which foundations can help you. This means we cannot tell you in advance how much you might receive.

When can I apply for financial support?

You can apply at any time of the year. We accept applications all year round.

Can I get support other than money?

Yes. In addition to financial support, FVO offers activity packages twice a year – once in summer and once in winter.

The packages may include gift vouchers for sports and leisure equipment, cinema trips, amusement parks, zoos and other days out. There are different types of packages, available to applicants across Sweden.

Can I get emergency financial help?

FVO cannot provide emergency financial help. If you need help right away, please contact the social services department in your municipality.

What is a foundation?

A foundation manages money that must be used for a specific purpose. This purpose determines who can receive financial support and what the money can be used for. That’s why different foundations have different rules about who can receive support.

Applications and attachments

How do I apply?

You can apply for support online or using a paper application form. We recommend applying online if you can.

Before you start, you’ll need to gather the attachments required for your application. On our Apply for Support page, you’ll find information about how to apply and the steps you need to follow.

Which attachments do I need to include?

Everyone who applies must include a Family Certificate, an Income Tax Return, annual bank statements and a rent invoice or tenancy agreement.

Depending on your circumstances, you may also need to include other attachments showing your income, expenses or other information in your application.

Our checklist shows you which attachments you need and what they should contain.

How do I turn paper documents into digital files?

If your attachments are on paper, you can photograph or scan them using your phone. If a document has several pages, it’s best to scan them so that all the pages are saved in one file.

Why do you need so much information?

We need this information to assess your application according to the Swedish Tax Agency’s rules and find out which foundations may be able to help you. Each foundation has its own purpose and therefore different rules about who can receive support.

For example, one foundation may support people living in a particular area, while another may help women, children, older people or people with certain jobs or educational backgrounds. That’s why it’s important to fill in all the information that applies to you, including previous jobs and education.

Do you receive social assistance?
If so, you also need to include FVO’s form, which must be completed by you and your social worker.

Do I need BankID to apply online?

Yes, you need BankID to apply online. FVO uses BankID to verify your identity and make sure that financial support is paid to the right person.

If you don’t have BankID, you can contact your bank for help. You can also choose to apply using a paper application form.

Please note: FVO will never call you and ask you to use your BankID.

Why does BankID say “InRule Process Automation”?

When you use BankID to apply for support from FVO, you’ll see the message "Jag identifierar mig hos InRule Process Automation" (I am identifying myself with InRule Process Automation).

This is correct, and you can safely continue verifying your identity.

The online application isn’t working – what should I do?

First, try updating your web browser. The online application works best with a recent version of Google Chrome or Safari.

If it still doesn’t work, you can apply using a paper application form. Unfortunately, FVO is unable to provide individual technical support.

Can I send additional information after submitting my application?

Our caseworkers will assess whether your application needs any additional information, based on the different requirements and purposes of the foundations. If we need anything else, we’ll contact you.

You cannot send additional information by email or post unless we ask you to.

Can you send me a paper application form?

If you can’t print the form yourself, you can send us a stamped, self-addressed envelope, and we’ll send you a copy.

How often can I apply?

If you’ve received financial support from FVO, you must wait at least 13 months before applying again. The 13 months are counted from the month when you received the money.

After you've applied

Have you received my application?

If you apply online, you’ll receive a confirmation email when we’ve received your application. We recommend keeping this email.

For security reasons, we cannot confirm by phone or email whether we’ve received an individual application. This also applies if you’ve submitted a paper application.

What happens after I’ve submitted my application?

If you apply online, you’ll receive a confirmation email. Once we’ve processed your application, we’ll also let you know whether it has been approved or rejected.

If you apply on paper, we’ll only contact you if your application is approved. You won’t be notified if it’s rejected. If approved, the money will be paid into the bank account you provided.

In some cases, a decision may take longer because certain foundations only pay out financial support at specific times of the year.

When will I hear back?

It usually takes a few months to receive a decision. It may take longer when we receive a large number of applications.

Some applications need a more detailed review and can take up to six months to process.

If you applied online, you’ll receive an email once a decision has been made.

Can you answer questions about my application?

For security and privacy reasons, we cannot answer questions about submitted applications by phone or email. This includes questions about whether we’ve received your application or whether it’s been approved or rejected.

We cannot be sure that the person contacting us is the same person who submitted the application. We also handle many applications from people with protected personal information, so we need to follow the same rule for everyone.

Why was my application rejected?

The most common reason for rejection is an incomplete application. For example, an attachment or some information we need to assess your application may be missing.

Your application may also be rejected if your income is above the Swedish Tax Agency’s limit for being considered in financial need. FVO does not provide financial support to pay off debts or for dental care that is not considered necessary.

Read more about why applications are rejected.
